We have developed the Borodur® boronizing process. Our boronizing technology is based on a thermochemical process during which hard and wear resistant Borocoat® layers are obtained by diffusing boron into the surface of the material.

The application of these layers are wide spread in the field of mechanical engineering, tool manufacturing, automotive industry, oil & gas production and power plant engineering.


EKABOR® boronizing agents are necessary to produce hard and wear resistant boride layers during the boronizing process.

The boronizing agents are offered as powders, granulates and pastes. Their application depends on the specific technological conditions such as geometry of parts, material and so on.


Borocoat® diffusion coatings are layers produced by means of Borodur® process. They are based on metallic borides and are highly wear resistant.

Many materials are suitable for Borocoat® such as steels, cast iron, nickel based alloys and refractory metals. Unsuitable for boronizing are e.g. aluminium, copper and brass.

BorTec - Your Expert for Wear Protection

Wear on metal parts is a challenge in many industries and applications. Even steel products have to contend with different wear. Many types of steel are susceptible to corrosion and wear caused by abrasion, adhesion, surface distress and tribooxidation.

In principle, wear means the progressive loss of material from the surface of a hard body due to mechanical causes. Wear manifests itself in various forms. Cracks, pits, holes, crests, seizure or material removal are among the potential manifestations of wear. Wear reduces the reliability of components and can lead to high costs for repair or the necessary replacement of the affected parts.

Application Areas for Optimizing Wear Protection

Many metallic products are affected by mechanical wear. In most branches of industry, therefore, wear protection and refining used materials is required to minimize the number of repair processes and to extend the life of the parts used.

Particularly affected by wear, for example, are conveyors, where hard and sharp-edged materials are moved. Here, for example, screw conveyor, vibrating funnels, vibrators can be mentioned. Also, due to design, most types of bearings, clutches, brakes and transmissions are commonly affected by wear and tear. In construction, high demands are also placed on hardness and corrosion protection. Other applications include the fittings industry, power plant technology, turbo chargers, tool construction, mold manufacturing, plastics processing, glass industry, gear making, textile machinery, aluminum processing and mechanical engineering.

Main Mechanisms Causing Wear

There are four effects that describe the most common wear processes. These are adhesive wear, abrasive wear, surface fatique and tribooxidation.

  1. Abrasive wear refers to wear caused by hard particles in the lubricant or by roughness between friction partners. The hard particles penetrate the surface of the friction partner, the surface is scratched and there is a micro-cutting. Micro grooves and breaks occur due to scratching stress.
  2. Adhesive wear refers to wear caused by surface adhesion. Repeated sliding movements gradually erode surface layers. This is usually the case for less hard work pieces, but it also appears with surfaces that have the same or similar hardness to the adhesive wear. Cause of adhesive wear is the formation and separation of atomic bonds in e.g. oxidation layers, so-called micro-fusing. Material transfer occurs as a result of adhesion.
  3. Surface fatique is caused by a material’s changeable or swelling stress. Here micro-cracks occur in the surface, which increase under additional load.
  4. Under tribooxidation is meant the development of intermediate layers by chemical processes and the subsequent destruction of these layers by motion of the sliding partners.

Increase in Hardness as a Measure to Protect Against Wear

Hardness can be described as the resistance that opposes the penetration of another body. This may be a harder, same hardness or softer body. To minimize wear, the respective purpose also plays an important role. Thus, in abrasive wear the body should be harder than the friction partners, while in impact wear the body should be softer. For wear protection not only maximum hardness is crucial. Depending on the application, the body should be provided selectively with hardness properties.
Even for abrasion, in addition to the optimal roughness of surfaces, the hardness is crucial.

Wear Protection with BorTec Solutions

With Borocoat® diffusion coatings applied in the Borodur procedure, BorTec provides a solution for high demands in wear protection. The Borodur® method is based on the process of boriding. By diffusing boron into the surface of the material an extremely hard layer is produced, which increases wear protection enormously, especially against abrasive and adhesive loading. Also the thermal stability is increased up to 1000°C. The exact values in each case depend on the treated initial material.

The Borocoat® coatings are suitable for different materials. The borided layers developed by BorTec are applicable among others for unalloyed and low alloyed steels, stainless steels (austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex), cold, warm and high-speed steels, PM steels and nickel-based alloys.
